Within the rectangle there is stamped a crown, FAT (Fabbricca d'Arma Terni, the government arsenal at Terni) and a two digit date (41, 42, or 43). These Terni produced M91/41 rifles have a serial number letter prefix that starts with an A or B. For example, my M91/41 is a FAT 43 with a serial number of AT1844.

My friend has an Italian Carcano and he is trying to find out more about the rifle. The only info I have right now on his weapon is that it is a R.E. Terni 6.5 Carcano. The model number is 36 XIV and the serial number is K9238. It has all of the markings on it of a carcano. It has the crown above the action as well as stamps on the stock. I could not tell you what these markings are at this time. If that is necessary for the identification of the origin of the gun then I will get that info. Can anyone help us farther on identifying this weapon? I do believe that it is a 6.5x52 carbine; is this correct as well?

Overall it is in about Fine condition. Our Assessment: This Italian Carcano is a Model 1938 Short Rifle chambered in 6.5x52mm. It was made at the Terni Arsenal back in 1944.
It has had its metal and wood refinished but still has nice markings on the metal. This is a nice looking Carbine that will add to you military collection. Prior to 1938 and after 1940 Italian Carcanos were chambered in 6.5x52mm. For the short time in between they were chambered in 7.35x53mm.Some info from Wikipedia: “After reports of inadequate performance of the 6.5×52mm Mannlicher-Carcano at both short and long ranges during the campaigns in Italian North Africa (1924-1934), and the Second Italo-Abyssinian War (1934), the Italian army introduced a new short rifle in 1938, the Modello 1938, together with a new cartridge in 7.35.

In addition to the slightly larger caliber, Italian ordnance designers introduced a spitzer-type bullet for the new cartridge, with the tip filled with aluminum to produce an unstable (tumbling) projectile upon impact in soft tissue.Although the intention was to create a more powerful and precise rifle cartridge, the decision to adopt a lighter bullet than in the 6.5 mm Carcano, and various design problems of the 91/38 rifle, didn't permit the cartridge to have the intended success in 1940, all rifle and ammunition production reverted to 6.5 mm, but no 7.35 mm Mod. 38 rifles or carbines were ever re-barreled to the old 6.5×52mm caliber.'
